1. About the French Exchange

Established in 1970, the Shaw Cross French Exchange has now been bringing young rugby league players from England and France together for 56 years.

The exchange connects Shaw Cross Sharks with JAYET and our rugby league friends in Lot-et-Garonne. It is widely regarded within the club as rugby league's longest-running international youth exchange.

The French Exchange began in 1970 through the shared vision and commitment of Alan Lancaster, Douglas Hird, Alain Duriac and Jackie Fort. Their pioneering work created a unique friendship between Shaw Cross and Lot-et-Garonne that has continued for more than five decades.

Nearly 2,000 young players have experienced the programme, forming friendships and memories that have lasted long beyond their time in junior rugby.

MORE THAN RUGBY

The exchange gives young people an opportunity to experience another country, culture and way of life through rugby league.

Players stay with host families, take part in matches and training, visit local attractions and enjoy a programme of social and cultural activities. When Shaw Cross hosts the exchange, French players become part of our club and community. When our teams travel to France, French families provide the same welcome.

The programme represents the values at the heart of Shaw Cross:

- Friendship
- Respect
- Community
- Opportunity
- Teamwork
- International understanding

Generations of Shaw Cross families, players, coaches, organisers, fundraisers, sponsors and volunteers on both sides of the Channel have helped preserve this unique relationship.

As Shaw Cross approaches its 80th anniversary, the French Exchange remains an important part of the club's history and its continuing commitment to young people, friendship and international grassroots rugby league.
