On Saturday our newly formed Under 13 Girls had a first taste of competitive Rugby League. Although it was a loss on paper, it was a win in so many other ways; the group will learn and get better from playing games, and we are looking forward to seeing them develop throughout the year.
The girls started training back in September, with a small number of enthusiastic young girls eager to train and play rugby league. This grew with numbers each week; the coaching staff created a great environment for the girls to grow and have fun, with a huge focus on kids coming to training and having smiles on faces, to now having a team of over 18 girls wanting to play Rugby League.
Although the girls lost 22-6 to Guisley on Saturday, there's so many positives! A new team with 90% of players having never played before, going away to an experienced team and to be so competitive, with the score line being within a score with 10 minutes to go, it's such a positive and to see these girls be so together on the field was fantastic. When the final whistle blows and all the girls come to the side line smiling and just happy to be together, and proud of how far they have come is something words can't describe.
The awards after the match were a hard choice for the coaches, with so many players stepping up and giving so much more than we could have expected, the following players from Shaw Cross took away the awards on the day:
Coaches Player : Lexi-Mae Jenkinson (Available for Sponsor)
Parents Player : Emily Kemp (Sponsored by Tall & Small Construction)
Opposition Player : Binta Secka (Available for Sponsor)
Magic Moment : Libby Bratley (Available for Sponsor)
