What an evening we had at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium last night for the Heavy Woollen finals! We had three teams playing, all against our close rivals Dewsbury Moor, with all three teams coming away with the wins and bringing the silverware back to Shaw Cross. Massive credit has to go to Dewsbury Moor for turning up and creating three fantastic games of rugby. It was a fantastic night to be involved in amateur rugby league.

All three games had a little bit of everything. Some great skill on show, plenty of effort and some real tough defensive efforts from all teams and players. Credit goes to everyone who took to the field, and a special mention to all the coaches who give up hours of free time voluntarily to get these young athletes performing week in, week out.

I have been involved with rugby league for most of my life, and at Shaw Cross for coming up to 10 years. I have seen some special things in the sport, many within our own club, that make me proud to be a Shark. Tonight I witnessed something that was truly special, and something most people that were there will remember forever. In the under 15s game, Dewsbury Moor brought a player onto the field, Harrison, who has learning difficulties. Our under 15’s coach, Lee, saw this and quickly went onto the field to pass a message onto his players. Harrison got to take the last carry of the game and broke through the defensive line, carrying the ball over 70m to score the last try of the game! Players from both teams celebrated the try with Harrison and he then went on to convert his own try to finish the game. What a special moment to witness…
