Richard Stephenson has been appointed Club Chairman; a familiar face and name at the Sharks, Richard has been part of the club since a junior, having played all the way through to representing our Open age team. He's also been a successful coach for many years, and up to last year was the Junior chairperson. He's a clubman through and through, and takes on the new role of Club Chairman with a wealth of knowledge and love for the club. Richard will be an outstanding appointment and asset for us at Shaw Cross.
Martin Osborne has been appointed the role of Vice Chairman; with many years at the club as a coach and volunteer, he is still coaching to this day. Martin was previously on the executive committee as Head of Girls, he comes with a wealth of knowledge on how the club runs and would like to operate going forward. A person who always puts others first and wants the club to succeed, is only good news for the Sharks. Another great appointment and asset for the club.
A message from our new Chairman Richard:
First of all I would just like to thank Brett Turner from who I take over the role, the work he’s done over the last 9+ years has to be commended and is truly appreciated, to dedicate so much time and effort for that duration as a volunteer is something you have to applaud, thank you Brett from all members past and present at the club. Also a big thank you to Mick, his contribution for over 30 years to the club is just amazing.
I’m very honoured to be leading this great club, a club I have been part of for most of my life, it’s a role I don’t take lightly, I want the club to be well run, with high standards - to look after all members and volunteers, I’m looking forward to making some changes to bring the true sharks family together and create a place people want to be a part of and help the club flourish whilst always “reaching forward.”
A message from our previous Chairman Brett:
I’d like to wish the best of luck to Richard and Martin in their new roles. The level of commitment required would be daunting for some people, but so far they’ve met it head on. Some new eyes and new energy can only be a good thing for the club going forward.
For me personally, I’m not going anywhere just yet. I’ll still be involved with the open age, and coaching the under 8’s has meant getting the whole family involved which is nice. Ultimately spending a bit less time on club matters means being able to spend more time with them, especially while the kids are still at an age where they actually want to know me.
Shaw Cross is in my blood and in my heart and it always will be. I’ll look back on my time as Chairman with great pride for as long as I live.
A message from our new Vice Chairman Martin:
Firstly can I just thank Mick Turner for all the years of hard work and dedication to the Sharks, I have got to know Mick a lot over the last eight years involved at the club, and I can honestly say he’s got nothing but the best interests of the club at heart The time, dedication and commitment to our club is clear to see for all, open age chairman for 30 years, open age coach for 15 years plus the years on the executive committee, thank you Mick for everything, I will no doubt be calling you from time to time for advice.
I have been asked to come and assist Richard (Chairman) as the Vice Chairman, it’s a position I didn’t take lightly before agreeing to do so, it comes with a lot of responsibility, and a position I’m honoured to be asked to do. I look forward to working closely with Richard to make the club a place people want to come and be part of, Rugby League is far more than a game, it’s a family, and both myself and Richard have the similar ideas on how to move forward as a club.
A message from our previous Vice Chairman Mick:
I have been part of Shaw Cross Sharks longer than I can remember, it’s a club I have dedicated so much of my life to, and I’m extremely proud of how we have grown to the club we have today, it’s been lots of hard work from many volunteers, and one we all should be proud of. It’s time for me to take a step back and enjoy a little retirement, put my feet up and let some fresh energy take the club to the next level. I’m still involved with the club as President, and will be here to help when needed. I would like to wish both Richard and Martin all the very best in taking over the roles of chairman and vice chairman, I’m sure you will both do a great job, and I’m only on the end of the phone if you need any help. Thanks to everyone for your support over the years.
